My city is the coolest. And strangest.

"OK, first we had the dead manta ray, or whatever it technically is, over at Market and Montgomery streets last week. Today, dear readers, we have this dead starfish sighting at the bus stop island at Kearny/Market. What?"

that be a bat ray, endearingly called a "mud marlin" (Myliobatis californica) by fishermen who love to catch 'em. in berkeley every year they have a Mud Marlin Derby (i designed a t-shirt for it one year), people generally pull in fish to the 100lb variety.
the state record is over 200lbs.

i believe i hooked up to one once, in oceanside harbor, of the large-ish variety. something took my bait and just ran. went straight towards the harbor mouth and didn't stop, and i couldn't do a thing to stop it. they're magnificently strong beasts, and have a brutal stinger as well. if you can pull one of those in you've done yeoman's work.
